Intrauterine Transfusions (IUT)
Intrauterine Transfusion (IUT) is a highly specialized procedure used to treat severe fetal anemia while the baby is still in the womb. This condition often results from Rh incompatibility, alloimmunization, or certain infections and genetic disorders that destroy fetal red blood cells.
During the IUT procedure, a carefully matched unit of red blood cells is transfused directly into the baby’s circulation—typically through the umbilical vein under ultrasound guidance. This helps restore healthy blood levels and prevents life-threatening complications like hydrops fetalis or heart failure.
When is IUT Recommended?
- Severe fetal anemia detected through Doppler ultrasound or blood tests
- Maternal alloimmunization (e.g., anti-D, anti-c, or anti-Kell antibodies)
- High risk of Rh disease or infections like parvovirus B19
